## 5. Academic Monograph
Phytosphingosine is a sphingolipid-derived bioactive compound exhibiting multifunctional properties including antimicrobial activity, skin moisturization, and hydration, rendering it highly valuable for cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.
N-acyl-phytosphingosine is effective in improving impaired skin barrier function, alleviates UVB-induced barrier damage, increases expression of filaggrin and loricrin, and reduces sunburn cell count.
Phytosphingosine upregulates key genes involved in ceramide biosynthesis, keratinocyte proliferation, and differentiation.
Upon topical application, phytosphingosine significantly improves barrier function by reducing transepidermal water loss and erythema while increasing skin thickness and density.
Phytosphingosine induces cell death in fibroblasts and reduces fibrosis progression.
In the multilamellar lipid matrix of stratum corneum, phytosphingosine-based ceramides (NP and AP) exhibit more CO hydrogen bonds compared to sphingosine-based ceramides (NS and AS), consistent with lower amide I FTIR frequencies.
The hydroxyl group on the phytosphingosine base increases CO hydrogen bonding, affecting the structural organization of stratum corneum.
